Durand Jones & The Indications returned to San Antonio last night, promoting their latest album Flowers and turning the Aztec Theatre into a soul sanctuary. The Psychedelics opened the night with their swirling funk grooves before the Indications delivered their signature blend of grit and silk.

Formed more than a decade ago in Indiana, the Indications have become a cornerstone of the modern soul revival. They had not released an album since 2021, with several members branching out into acclaimed solo projects in the meantime. Jones himself lived in San Antonio for a time, often spotted in Southtown and along the St. Mary’s strip, before eventually moving away. “San Antonio, you’re always a favorite,” he told the crowd, drawing cheers from the local audience.

The stage was dressed with large white paper orchids as Jones and drummer-vocalist Aaron Frazer traded leads throughout the night. Jones’ deep, impassioned voice anchored the room, while Frazer’s falsetto provided a smooth, sweet counterweight.

Alongside fan favorites like the tender “Is It Any Wonder?” and the breezy “Let’s Go Cruising,” the band leaned into material from Flowers. The new record isn’t as overtly sensual as past releases. Instead, it feels more grounded and reflective. It carries the sense that in their time apart, the band grew at peace with change, mirroring the phases of the moon and the life cycles of flowers. Rather than smoothing over life’s rough edges or coating them in sweetness, the Indications embrace them, uncovering beauty in uneasiness and channeling it into music that feels both vulnerable and real.
